Cruise Vessel Norwegian Dawn Hits Reef near Bermuda after Losing Power

BERMUDA – If any Sint Maarteners were on the Norwegian Dawn Cruise Ship, they are breathing a sign of relief.  The vessel carrying more than 3,500 passengers/crew struck a reef while transiting the North Channel of Bermuda after losing power to its systems late Tuesday afternoon.

This incident happened after the vessel departed cruise port King’s Wharf.  After a preliminary inspection by divers to assess possible damage, the vessel was given the green light to move off the reef.

Two tugboats assisted with the refloating of the vessel.  There were no injuries reported during the grounding on the reef.

Norwegian Dawn had arrived in Bermuda from Boston, U.S. on Sunday for a two-night stop-over.

The vessel is scheduled to depart Bermuda Wednesday afternoon pending a full hull damage inspection.
