SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) - On Wednesday, March 17, 2021, the Court in the First Instance sentenced V. to 15 years of imprisonment for the killing of T.R. on Thursday, February 20, 2020, and for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and illicit drugs, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said in a press statement on Wednesday.
The Court found manslaughter proven in the case of a shooting that claimed the life of a young man who unfortunately was traversing Middle Region on his way home when he was mistakenly targeted and killed, the OM said.
The Prosecutor’s Office views this verdict as the rendering of justice and is aware that the sentence cannot restore the life taken or erase the immeasurable grief of T.R.’s family and loved ones, the OM said in its statement.
The possession and use of unlicensed firearms and acts of violence continued to be of great concern to OM. These criminal acts cause feelings of great insecurity and fear in the community of Sint Maarten. The public is urged to be aware that the possession and/or use of unlicensed firearms and illicit drugs constitute criminal acts with serious consequences, the OM media statement concludes.
