St. Dominic Wins Round One of Annual Interscholastic Debate Competition 2024

SINT MAARTEN (SOUTH REWARD) - The St. Maarten Youth Parliament is thrilled to announce that the Annual Interscholastic Debate Finals will take place on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, at the University of St. Martin (USM). The event will begin promptly at 6:30 PM.

The competition kicked off with an electrifying preliminary round on Saturday, October 26th, 2024. In this first debate, St. Dominic High School faced off against Learning Unlimited on the topic: “Investing in renewable energy is beneficial for St. Maarten.” Representing the proposition team, St. Dominic's debaters included Tanya Halley (1st speaker), Adio Williams (2nd speaker), and Tamanna Sharma (rebutter). The opposition team, Learning Unlimited, featured Bhavna Sakhrani (1st speaker), Gigi Cai (2nd speaker), and Ajani Blake (rebutter).

The debate was marked by strong arguments from both sides, but St. Dominic emerged victorious with a score of 568 points, outperforming Learning Unlimited, who scored 514 points, resulting in a 54-point lead. Special recognition was given to Adio Williams of St. Dominic, who was named Best Speaker for the night with a score of 72 points.

The Final Debate will see St. Dominic competing against defending champion, Milton Peters College, on the topic: “Relaxed hair grooming rules are a distraction to learning” on Saturday November 2nd at the University of St. Martin.

This much-anticipated showdown will mark the culmination of this year’s interscholastic debates, with both teams eager to showcase their skills in persuasive argumentation and public speaking.

Community members are invited to come out and support the young debaters. There will be an entrance fee of $2.00 per person.

The St. Maarten Youth Parliament invites students, educators, families, and the community at large to attend and support the young debaters who are dedicated to exploring relevant issues and developing their oratory talents.
