Island Hoops presents 2nd Annual Iman Shumpert Basketball Skills Camp on September 6th

SUCKER GARDEN - Island Hoops, a Sint Maarten youth basketball academy, presents the 2nd Annual Iman Shumpert Basketball Skills Camp at Melford Hazel Sports Complex on Soualiga Road, September 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The sports camp is free, and all young basketball players (general ages 6-17) are encouraged to attend, dressed to play and ready to learn and have fun.

Local fireman and youth organizer Paul Bell founded Island Hoops to give young athletes the opportunity to continue to develop their basketball skills and grow as a player. The sports camp was made possible by local businesses and citizens working together to make this free and available to all. Sponsors for 2014 include
SportConvo.com, Seven Seas Water, The American Clinic, andInsideHoops.com.

Shumpert, an exciting young NBA player with the New York Knicks, donated his time last summer to speak with local St. Maarten youths about the importance of keeping their minds and bodies strong. He provided basketball tips, posed for pictures and offered advice to aspiring young athletes. Kids who attended last year absolutely loved the experience.

This summer, Shumpert returns with some pro-level friends, ready to host a weekend basketball-intensive sports camp, complete with basketball drill stations, 5-on-5 games, group discussions and educational sessions on skills, fitness and more. And because he loves the beauty of St. Maarten, Shumpert is sticking around for several more days to work out with shooting coach and former pro basketball player Derrek Hamilton ofProPurposeDev.com

Island Hoops works in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth & Sports Affairs as well as the Ministry of Health, Social Development & Labor, the local Basketball Association and private sponsors in order to bring Sint Maarteners high-quality, exciting and unique youth programs.

All young players across Sint Maarten and Saint Martin should attend and enjoy!

Ministry of Health to establish Ebola Incidence Management Team. Meetings with stakeholders continues

GREAT BAY – The Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour (Ministry VSA) is in the process of establishing a “Sint Maarten Ebola Virus Disease Incidence Management Team” (SXM EVD IMT), and is continuing to meet with stakeholders as part of national preparedness according to international health regulations and requirements for every country around the world.

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans.
This EVD outbreak has a fatality rate of 54%.  Early intervention is having a positive result on mortality as it used to be 90%.

The current outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa poses a low risk for the Caribbean.  There are no cases of Ebola in the Caribbean.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared early August a Public Health Emergency of International Concern with respect to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that is in the States of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

On August 21 various stakeholders that fall under Emergency Support Function (ESF-6) which is part of the national disaster management system, met at Ministry VSA to discuss preparedness issues and plans in connection with EVD.

ESF-6 comprises of Public Health, Inspectorate, Collective Prevention Services (CPS), Physicians, St. Maarten Medical Center, Laborartory and Emergency Medical Services.

Minister of VSA Hon. Cornelius de Weever has been following all developments closely with respect to EVD and is confident about the pro-active preparations that the country is taking as required by international health organizations.

Head of CPS Dr. Virginia Asin stated, “The purpose of the meeting was to inform the coordinators about the current status and to discuss and agree on a preparedness plan consisting of preparedness plans of each of the organizations within ESF-6.

“After the introductions the coordinators discussed what the preparedness of their individual institute would entail. Much discussion went into the preparedness of the hospital (SMMC), the laboratory (SLS), Physicians and Pharmacists.

The ESF-6 coordinators also at the meeting will inform their staff about EBV and the preparedness for Sint Maarten.

“The coordinators will submit their plans and within two weeks all the plans will be compiled as one ESF-6 Ebola Preparedness plan.

“In a subsequent meeting stakeholders outside the Health Sector will be informed and their preparedness discussed,” CPS Head Dr. Asin disclosed on Sunday.

For further information you should consult with your family physician or call CPS at telephone number: 542-3553, 542-2078.

President of Parliament Arrindell receives courtesy visit from Dutch Military

PHILIPSBURG – The President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell recently received a courtesy visit from Commander Hans Lodder and military entourage.

“We discussed several issues including the work that the marines are doing throughout the country with emphasis on working with local authorities in assisting with safety and security trainings and with social programs.

“I shared with the outgoing commander that I would like to see more opportunities for our young men and women who expressed their desire to do so, to have a career in the military.

“I was very pleased with the discussions and looking forward to explore the avenues that would give some of our people the chance to be trained in the different functions at the Ministry of Defense.

“The task of Defense is a Kingdom authority. We must remember that the Netherlands is close by through the new entities of Saba and Statia. Training possibilities are not farfetched if we keep an open mind and make good use of the network within the Kingdom and make it work for our people.

“The Commander also signed the guest book of Parliament, leaving etched in our constitutional history words of wisdom and support for the People of Sint Maarten,” President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell said on Sunday.

Harbour says Zebec US$100 Million Claim without Merit

POINT BLANCHE –The St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies has become aware of a press release of Zebec Development N.V. dated 20 August 2014, in which Zebec states that it has filed a claim against the Harbour and its director, Mark Mingo, for more than USD 100 million.

The Harbour considers this claim to be wholly without merit and will defend the claim vigorously before the St. Maarten Courts. The Harbour has complete confidence in the positive outcome of these proceedings.

The Harbour wishes to express its regret over the fact that Zebec has chosen to abandon the project after the Harbour invested significant time and funds, inter alia for preparing the development land for the project.

The Harbour will now seek alternative opportunities to develop the land for the benefit of St. Maarten, its economy and its people. Also, the Harbour will investigate the options to recover its damages from Zebec.

Furthermore, although it is not the policy of the Harbour to discuss such matters in public, the Harbour wishes to refute the blatant misrepresentation of facts in Zebec’s press release.

Contrary to Zebec’s allegations, the Harbour never failed to honour signed agreements between the parties. On the contrary, the Harbour has repeatedly given Zebec the opportunity to proceed with the project.

Zebec, however, has not been able to progress beyond the initial phase of the project even though some two and a half years have passed since the signing of the development agreement.

Furthermore, Zebec has recently taken the position that it would not pursue the project anymore unless previously agreed conditions, as laid down in signed agreements, would be altered in its favour.

When the Harbour maintained the position that the project should be completed in accordance with the signed agreements, Zebec chose to abandon the project and issue a frivolous lawsuit, in an obvious attempt to shift the blame of the project’s collapse towards the Harbour, according to a statement by the harbour’s legal team.

Council on Law Enforcement presents reports to Philipsburg Jubilee Library

PHILIPSBURG - The Council on Law Enforcements on Thursday presented several of its investigation reports to the Philipsburg Jubilee Library. The reports were presented by the council’s secretary-general Marianne Steenbergen to Monique Albers, director of Philipsburg Jubilee Library.

The reports are the results of the Council’s inspections conducted in Sint Maarten in 2011, 2012 and 2013 addressing various matters related to the functioning of the judicial chain.

Investigations have been conducted, among others, into procedures followed when a crime is reported. The council’s inspection had focused on procedures followed by the police force in the event that a complaint is filed.

Another report addressed the assistance granted to victims of crime (slachtofferhulp), with the council researching the methods employed within the criminal justice system in St. Maarten for helping the victims of crime.

A report on juvenile rehabilitation in Sint Maarten assessed the method employed in St. Maarten in relation to the three responsibilities of the juvenile probation service. These are providing information and advice, mandatory support and co-ordination of community service orders.

The fourth inspection report produced by the Council on Law Enforcement was one regarding how the investigation procedure of the detective department is carried out, once a crime is reported.

In a report on adult probation in Sint Maarten, the Council on Law Enforcement detailed in which way probation tasks are executed by the probation department of the Foundation for Judicial Institutions Windward Islands in Sint Maarten. Those tasks are information and advice, supervision by the probation service, tasks within the prison and coordination of the execution of community sanctions and measures.

A separate investigative report dealing with St. Maarten’s detention capacity, in Sint Maarten looked into whether or the detention capacity in Sint Maarten meets present needs.

The report on the education of Police in Sint Maarten addressed the extent of and in which way police education is implemented in Sint Maarten.

The council carried out an inspection of border control and the movement of persons at St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International airport, the harbor and beaches, in 2013.

The ultimate objective of the Council on Law Enforcement is to provide recommendations to the Ministers of Justice of the three countries of the Dutch Kingdom to correct shortcomings. With the presentation of the reports to the Library, the Council hopes to inform the general public about the work of the Council. The council endeavors to share its findings about organizations within the justice system, in addition to these servingas guidelines aimed at improving the workings of those organizations as well as procedures within the judicial chain in Sint Maarten, in general.

In accepting the reports, Monique Albers, director of the Library, expressed the library’s gratitude and indicated that the reports will be on display at the library.

MP JOHAN LEONARD APPLAUDS COLLECTION OF WEAPONS BY JUSTICE MINISTRY

PHILIPSBURG—Member of Parliament, Johan ‘Janchi’ Leonard welcomes government initiatives to reduce the number of fire-arms circulating in St. Maarten. The measure was announced by the minister of justice and entails the return of weapons in the hands of persons, who are not entitled to have these in their possession.

The approach, said Leonard, is certainly a step in the right direction, considering the number of violent crimes where a firearm is used.

According to Leonard, the initiative is one that is in keeping with his own views on safety and security of St. Maarten

More Controls

MP Leonard added that he is specifically advocating more controls, as a way of complimenting the desired reduction of illegal weapons on the street. These controls would have to be implemented at possible entry points and at so-called hot spots, known to authorities and to the general public.

Our open borders make it easier for persons to enter our island and commit crime, as easy as it is for weapons to be smuggled into the country, says Leonard.

The MP said that is was encouraging to note from the minister’s statements that the initiative entailing reduction of weapons came as a result of discussions with authorities on French St. Maarten. Concrete results are always possible when we engage in open discussion with our counterparts on the French side. We need to involve them in any decision we take. Those decisions are vital to facilitate our own crime response.

Priorities in combatting crime

Leonard says that high on his agenda are priorities in combating crime.

“Restoring confidence to the public, reducing armed robberies, reducing stolen vehicles incidents, constant controls on streets, benefits all of us”, says the member of parliament.

Elaborating further, he mentions that “combatting crime lies not only with government. This must be a community effort; police will not be everywhere. Members of the community always see something, know something. The confidence in police should be restored to a level, whereby coming forward becomes the norm, even before something actually takes place”.

To the question of how local communities can play a more decisive role in their own protection, Leonard advocates active neighborhood watch groups, working in collaboration with police (and sometimes, private security firms).

Crime Prevention

MP Leonard says that he looks forward to more emphasis being placed on crime prevention, in St. Maarten, in the next governing period. With prevention, we even save lives, channeling much needed resources and manpower. So much time and effort now goes into responding to crime –with some cases remaining unresolved for longer periods.

That has to become something of the past, he says. (Contributed by MP Janchie Leonard)

SXM Airport, Main Sponsor of “Save Our Zoo” Fundraiser

SIMPSON BAY - Facing bankruptcy and the possible closure of the zoo, the St. Maarten Zoological and Botanical Garden Foundation has been organizing fundraisers in recent months, to raise much needed funds for repairs of its facilities.

“The closure of the island’s only Zoo is not an option,” said Regina LaBega, Managing Director of the Princess Juliana International Airport, SXM, which has waded into the matter as one of the main corporate sponsors of a gala event dubbed “Save our Zoo,” scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Belair Community Center.

“It will be very disappointing to the many families, friends, and visitors, who come by to learn about animals and their habitats at the Zoo,” LaBega added.

The foundation’s dream is to create an educational and interactive atmosphere. The Zoo however, is not subsidized by Government, and has had to find ways to cover all expenses pertaining to the maintenance of the facility.

“We recognize how challenging this can be and therefore SXM did not hesitate to assist with this fundraiser,” LaBega said.

Actor, educator and activist, Lamman Rucker will be the special guest at the gala fundraiser. Mr. Rucker is well-known for his roles in Hollywood hits like “Why did I Get Married” (1 and 2), “Black Coffee,” “The Man In 3B;” and TV series “As the World Turns,” “All My Children,” and “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns.”
