CANTO Connect 2025 Closes on a High Note: Collaboration, Innovation, and Progress. A united Industry effort to innovate and transform regional telecoms

SINT MAARTEN/CURACAO – Telecommunications leaders, innovators, and policymakers from across the Caribbean convened in Curaçao for CANTO Connect 2025 and 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM). The highly anticipated three-day event kicked off on January 26th at the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort and ran through January 28th, co-hosted by the Regulatory Authority of Curaçao (RAC).

CANTO theme 2025: Towards a Unified and Sustainable Gigabit Society

CANTO's 2025 events will explore the region's transition to a gigabit society. With declining infrastructure investment returns due to over-the-top (OTT) competition, industry leaders emphasised the urgent need for collaboration and policy harmonisation to secure a sustainable future.

Former Chairman, Mike Antonius, stressed that "a Caribbean Gigabit Society requires coordinated, multi-stakeholder collaboration among policymakers, private investors, and technology providers. Addressing funding shortfalls, regulatory inefficiencies, and market imbalances through fair-share infrastructure cost models and harmonised policies will be essential." He noted that these efforts will help bridge the digital divide, foster inclusive development, and position the Caribbean as a strong player in the global digital economy.

Dr. Delreo Newman, in his address, as the new Chairman of CANTO acknowledged his predecessor’s visionary leadership and emphasized his commitment to strengthening CANTO’s role in fostering digital transformation across the Caribbean.

“We stand at a pivotal moment where technology intersects with possibility. We must seize this opportunity to steer our region toward a connected and resilient future and work with governments to achieve their vision of a gigabit society by 2030. Moreover, inclusive will be at the heart of our strategy - ensuring equitable access to telecom services across all demographics to drive social and economic progress” said Chairman Newman.

Industry-Wide Collaboration for a Digital Future

Echoing this sentiment, Damian Blackburn, President and CEO of platinum sponsor ATN International Operators, highlighted the necessity of industry-wide cooperation. "We must collaborate in ways we never have before to realise a unified and sustainable One Gigabit Caribbean," he stated. ATNI is already leading by example via:

  • Expanding its MMG digital payments platform to support top-ups for all three major network operators;
  • Enhancing network resilience through shared fibre assets and independent wireless ISPs to extend internet reach; and
  • Strengthening partnerships across the digital ecosystem to drive innovation and inclusion.

CARIBBEAN TECHNOLOGY EXPERTS REVEAL TOP 5 AI INNOVATIONS AND STRATEGIES FOR 2025

SINT MAARTEN/FT. LAUDERDALE, FL. - Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries worldwide, and hospitality in the Caribbean is no exception. At the most recent Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF), hosted by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), industry experts shared insights into how AI is set to revolutionize the guest experience, streamline operations, and preserve the region’s vibrant culture.

Here are the top five trends every hospitality leader should know:

  1. High Tech Meets High Touch

AI isn’t about replacing people—it’s about empowering them. By automating repetitive tasks, AI frees up staff to focus on delivering personalized, authentic guest experiences. Adam Mogelonsky, a CHIEF panelist and Partner at Hotel Mogel Consulting Limited, emphasized, “Hospitality is fundamentally a people-to-people industry. AI should liberate teams to enhance human connections with guests.” This approach ensures that while technology streamlines operations, the heart of hospitality—genuine, meaningful interactions—remains at the forefront.

  1. Data Integration Will Unlock New Revenue Streams

Despite having access to vast amounts of guest data, many hotels struggle with siloed systems that limit its potential. Experts predict that 2025 will be the year of seamless data integration, made possible by advanced APIs and middleware. With real-time analytics and machine learning, hotels can unlock actionable insights to enhance the guest journey and drive revenue.

  1. Cost-Effective AI Solutions Are Within Reach

For businesses with limited budgets, AI-powered chatbots offer a practical starting point. These virtual assistants operate 24/7, handle multiple languages, and address both guest and employee needs. Christus Gill, Information Technology Manager at Zoëtry® Marigot Bay St. Lucia and CHIEF panelist, noted, “AI chatbots are an affordable, efficient way to enhance productivity and guest satisfaction, allowing staff to focus on higher-value interactions.”

Beyond chatbots, hotels can start integrating accessible AI tools to address specific needs. “In terms of what AI can do in the near-term,” said Mogelonsky, “consider contextual marketing messages, prearrival upselling, websites with adaptive content, dynamic room availability, personalized itinerary planning, responsive staff scheduling, guest feedback semantic analysis, and predictive maintenance.” These innovations provide a roadmap for hotels to implement AI solutions that immediately drive results and improve operations.

  1. Cybersecurity Must Evolve with AI

As AI evolves, so do cyber threats. The hospitality industry’s reliance on sensitive guest data—including names, addresses, passport details, and credit card information—makes it a prime target for hackers. High staff turnover further amplifies the risks, as new employees often gain access to critical systems before receiving adequate cybersecurity training.

Many hotels focus heavily on hardware and software security solutions but neglect the critical role of employee education. “AI is being leveraged by hackers to conduct sophisticated attacks, including evolving social engineering tactics. Cybersecurity training is critical in equipping employees to identify and respond to these threats effectively,” Gill added.

By prioritizing ongoing training for all staff, hotels can better safeguard sensitive guest data, mitigate the risks of human error, and create a culture of security that adapts to the latest threats.

  1. Preserving Caribbean Culture Through AI

AI can play a transformative role in showcasing and preserving the Caribbean’s rich heritage. From traditional recipes and local folklore to iconic lyrics, AI-powered platforms can bring the region’s cultural treasures to life for both guests and younger generations. “Training AI agents with local knowledge is an innovative way to make Caribbean culture more accessible and engaging, bridging tradition and technology,” said Gill.

As the Caribbean hospitality industry embraces these trends, AI is poised to redefine the guest experience while honoring the region’s unique identity. By staying ahead of these innovations, hospitality leaders can position themselves for long-term success in a rapidly evolving landscape.

CPS: Tuesday is World Cancer Day

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – Each year on 4 February, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) supports the Union for International Cancer Control to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer.

Preventing cancer and raising quality of life for cancer patients are recurring themes of World Cancer Day.

The Collective Prevention Services (CPS), says that according to PAHO, cancer is the second most frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in the Americas, after cardiovascular disease, and an important basis of health inequalities.

In the Americas, there are an estimated 4.2 million people were newly diagnosed and 1.4 million people died from the disease in 2022.

Approximately 54% of new cancer cases and 45.1% of cancer deaths occurred in people 69 years of age and younger, in the prime of their lives.

Globally, there were an estimated 19.9 million new cases of cancer and almost 10 million deaths from cancer. The cancer burden will increase by approximately 60% over the next two decades, further straining health systems, people, and communities.

The predicted global burden will increase to about 30 million new cancer cases by 2045, with the greatest increases occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

In the Americas region, the number of people expected to be diagnosed with cancer will increase by 59,3%, to approximately 6.7 million people are predicted to be diagnosed with cancer by 2045, if no further action is taken to prevent and control cancer.

CPS adds that cancer can be prevented and controlled by implementing evidence-based strategies for cancer prevention, screening, early detection, treatment, and palliative care.

The most common modifiable risk factors for cancer, which are shared with many other noncommunicable diseases, are: Tobacco use; Low fruit and vegetable intake; Harmful use of alcohol; and lack of physical activity.

USD 9 Billion+ Needed to Support Caribbean’s Transition to a Gigabit Society

SINT MAARTEN/CURACAO - The Caribbean’s transition to a gigabit society, defined by widespread high-speed internet connectivity of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), requires an investment of upwards of USD 9 billion, according to Lisa Agard, Chair of CANTO’s C9 committee.

Speaking on the second day of CANTO’s 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort, Agard highlighted the urgent need for infrastructural upgrades to bridge the region’s digital divide.

Agard emphasized the strong correlation between internet connectivity and economic development, noting that the Caribbean lags 15-20 points behind Europe and the USA on the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) ICT Development Index (IDI). She gave the more than 300 delegates some key statistics:

Connectivity Gaps and Their Impact

  • Close to 15 million people across the region, including Haiti, lack mobile connectivity.
  • 4.6 million households remain without any form of internet access, whether mobile or broadband.
  • Digital exclusion impedes workforce upskilling, entrepreneurship, and business competitiveness.
  • Establishing smart communities is at risk due to inadequate digital infrastructure.

Investment Challenges and OTT Impact

Despite annual infrastructure investments exceeding USD 500 million since 2017, regional telecom operators struggle to see returns. Agard highlighted that 70% of network data traffic is consumed by Over-the-Top (OTT) services, which do not contribute to network deployment or maintenance.

With regional data traffic across regional networks set to grow by twenty-six percent (26%), requiring infrastructure upgrades five times what now exists, Agard says regional governments must do all it takes to secure the funding for the necessary upgrades if the region is to realise its goals of universal connectivity and digital transformation in a 5G and ultra-fast internet connectivity world.

The investment needed to achieve gigabit society status includes:

  • USD 3.45 billion for mobile network upgrades.
  • USD 5.8 to USD 10.8 billion for fibre-based broadband connectivity.

SINT MAARTEN/TRINIDAD & TOBAGO - Caribbean Airlines takes note of the statement dated January 28, 2025, issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Airline Pilots Association (TTALPA) regarding the emergency landing of flight BW1541 on January 27, 2025.

The airline categorically rejects any suggestion that safety is being compromised, and reassures the travelling public that safety remains the foundation and number one priority of its operations.

Caribbean Airlines operates in strict compliance with local and international aviation safety regulations and is subject to rigorous oversight from multiple independent local and international regulatory bodies.

Key Facts:

  • Adherence to International Standards: Caribbean Airlines complies fully with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), both of which are globally recognized for ensuring the highest levels of airline safety and operational excellence.
  • Independent Audits and Regulatory Compliance: The airline has consistently passed all required audits, and importantly, it is an approved FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) repair station in accordance with the specified FAA capability listing, meaning that its maintenance and engineering department has been certified by the FAA as having the technical expertise to perform repairs, inspections, and alterations on aircraft and aircraft components, meeting strict international aviation standards.
