Man arrested for stabbing woman, 76, is psychiatric patient

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – A 27-year-old psychiatric patient has been arrested for stabbing a woman to death in the village of Den Dolder northeast of Utrecht.

The woman, who was 76, was fatally stabbed close to the station on Thursday afternoon and died of her injuries on the spot.

The suspect is now known to be a patient at an institute known as Fivoor, which specialises in forensic and intensive psychiatry.

“Our staff got in touch with the police because of the description which had been circulated,” spokesman Cees Siermann told the AD. The man was arrested at the clinic at around midnight, Siermann said.

Siermann would not say why the man was being treated but according to the AD he was living in a unit for people with light mental disabilities who also have behavioural issues or a psychiatric illness. The clinic is open and patients can come and go.

Siermann said the clinic has been shocked by events and is cooperating fully with the police.

Illegal fireworks result in dozens of amputations so far

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Plastic surgeons are calling for a ban on consumer fireworks and a crackdown on illegal fireworks as more teens suffered life-changing injuries.

Some 90% of firework injuries this year were due to illegal fireworks and half of those needing plastic surgery were 18 or under, the association of plastic surgeons NVPC said.

“Surgeons have had to amputate five hands, 18 fingers and six thumbs,” plastic surgeon Annekatrien van de Kar said. “Injuries to the hands are often combined with burns, facial injuries and broken bones. These explosives have disastrous results and the fact that children still have access to them is incomprehensible,” she said.

Plastic surgeons treated some 62 people after this year’s New Year festivities, compared to 54 last year. In 75% the victims lit the fireworks themselves while 13% were bystanders. Most victims were treated on New Year’s Eve but 16% got hurt before December 30.

The injuries are permanent and life-changing, particularly for young victims, Van de Kar said. “We not only need a ban but greater awareness of the dangers of illegal fireworks,” she said.

Amsterdam and Rotterdam mayors, and national police chief Janny Knol have all called for a national ban on fireworks following a number of serious incidents during the New Year festivities, including two deaths.

Consumer fireworks are banned in 19 cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, but the ban was widely ignored, and firework sales went ahead as usual.

“There is a firework ban in a number of councils but you can still buy them and they are still set off,” Knol said. “A ban would be a good first step.”

“A local ban has no chance of success as long as the government does nothing to stop the sale [of fireworks], and is giving consumers the wrong signal,” Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema said. Rotterdam mayor Carola Schouten and Utrecht’s Sharon Dijksma made similar appeals.

A survey by Ipsos last month revealed that 57% of the population would vote in favour of a ban in a referendum. Some 60% of people taking part in the RTL panel said they backed a ban, as did 64% of people taking part in the EenVandaag survey.

However there is no majority support for a ban in parliament and prime minister Dick Schoof told the AD on Tuesday the coalition has no plans to bring in legislation to introduce such a measure.

Man, 46, dies from firework injuries, taking death toll to two

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – A 46-year-old man who was badly injured in an accident involving fireworks on New Year’s Eve has died in hospital, Tiel town council has confirmed to local broadcaster Omroep Gelderland.

The man, who came from Buren, is the second person to die from a firework injury during the New Year festivities. A 14-year-old boy from Rotterdam died on December 31 while trying to light an extremely powerful and illegal firework.

Dozens of other people were seriously injured in the annual firework frenzy and 27 people were treated at Rotterdam’s specialist eye hospital – many of whom were bystanders.

The Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam mayors, and national police chief Janny Knol have all renewed calls for a national ban on fireworks.

Consumer fireworks are banned in 19 cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, but the ban was widely ignored, and sales went ahead as usual.

“There is a ban in a number of areas but you can still buy them and they are still set off,” Knol said. “A ban would be a good first step.” Prime minister Dick Schoof has already made it clear the government has no plans to introduce legislation to stop the sale of fireworks to the general public.

Over 200 people were arrested during the evening and riot police were drafted in to restore order in several places, both cities and in rural areas.

The fire brigade also reports more call-outs than in previous years. “New Year is seen by some as a licence for anarchy and violence, but this is not what you sign up for as an emergency service worker,” said national fire chief Tijs van Lieshout van Brandweer Nederland.

In total, 270 cars were destroyed by fire, the highest figure since 2019.

Justice minister David van Weel described the targeting of emergency service workers as “extremely sad”.

“This behaviour should never be seen as normal and we are going to do all we can to arrest those responsible,” he said on social media.

Third “random” shooting in Rotterdam, elderly victim in hospital

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – An 81-year-old man has been shot in IJsselmonde in the third such incident in the Rotterdam district in 12 days.

Passers-by found the severely wounded man early on Thursday morning and alerted emergency services, local broadcaster Rijnmond reported.

It is the third shooting in the district in little over a week and police are not ruling out that the perpetrator is choosing his victims at random, although other scenarios remain open.

On December 21 a man was shot and killed at Reyerdijk in the district and a week later a 58-year-old man was found on a cycle path on Roelantpad. He also died from his injuries.

None of the incidents seemed to be gang-related as none of the victims had criminal links, police said.

Police have released footage of a man they want to interview in connection with the shooting of the 58-year-old.

An investigation will have to show if the incidents are related, police said.

Calls mount for a national ban on consumer fireworks in NL

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Amsterdam and Rotterdam mayors, and national police chief Janny Knol have all called for a national ban on fireworks following a number of serious incidents during the New Year festivities in the Netherlands, including the death of a 14-year-old youth.

Amsterdam’s mayor Femke Halsema called for a national ban on fireworks after a “large number” of incidents in the capital.

“A local ban has no chance of success as long as the government does nothing to stop the sale [of fireworks], and is giving consumers the wrong signal,” she said. Rotterdam mayor Carola Schouten and Utrecht’s Sharon Dijksma made similar appeals.

Eye specialists have been calling for a national ban for years and repeated that again this year, after treating dozens of people for eye injuries.

The Dutch spent an estimated €118 million on fireworks this year.

Arrest total tops 200, police chief calls violence unacceptable

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – At least 200 people were arrested during the New Year festivities in the Netherlands during what police described as an “unsettled” evening.

Emergency service workers were attacked in several parts of the country and there were a number of “serious” incidents, police said.  Exact arrest figures will be published later.

Riot police were drafted in in Haarlem, Zaandam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, Breda, and Groningen well as in several rural areas, and in Culemborg they used tear gas to keep troublemakers at bay.

On the Dam in central Amsterdam, the atmosphere was tense and there were a number of robberies, police said. Police also reportedly fired warning shots after coming under attack.

Amsterdam’s mayor Femke Halsema called for a national ban on fireworks after a “large number” of incidents. In total 66 people were arrested, 32 vehicles were set on fire and ambulances answered 275 call-outs.

“A local ban has no chance of success as long as the government does nothing to stop the sale [of fireworks], and is giving consumers the wrong signal,” she said. Rotterdam mayor Carola Schouten made a similar call earlier.

“What should have been a celebration turned into a night of vandalism and violence in a number of places,” police chief Janny Knol said in a statement. “Police officers and other emergency service workers were targeted. It is unacceptable that there are so many, often serious, incidents at New Year.”

Knol also referred to the impact of powerful, and illegal, fireworks which led to the death of a 14-year-old boy and many serious injuries. “It is incomprehensible that people use them,” she said. “They are deliberately taking unacceptable risks for themselves and others.”

Justice minister David van Weel described the targeting of emergency service workers as “extremely sad”.

“This behaviour should never be seen as normal and we are going to do all we can to arrest those responsible,” he said on social media.

Every year there are calls for consumer fireworks to be banned in parliament and some 60% of the population support a ban, according to recent polls. However, there is no majority for such a move in the lower house of parliament.

According to the Dutch pyrotechnic sector, the Dutch spent a record €118 million on fireworks this year, beating the 2022 record by €3 million.

Two more KLM planes turn back after “technical” problems

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Two KLM aircraft were forced to return to Schiphol airport on Sunday night because of technical problems.

The first, a Boeing 777-200, was heading for Shanghai but returned to the Netherlands after three hours of flying time. The airline told news agency ANP there were problems with the drinking water supplies. It landed at Schiphol around 11.30 pm.

The second, a Boeing 777-300 was heading for Bali but turned back shortly after taking off. KLM blamed a technical problem but did not give further details.

That incident was the third involving a KLM Boeing in two days. On Saturday evening a flight had to make an emergency landing in the far south of Norway.

The Boeing 737 was heading from Oslo to Amsterdam when the pilots heard a “loud noise” 20 minutes after take off. They decided to head for Torp Sandefjord airport rather than continue their journey.

Dutch tax system needs major overhaul, says central bank chief

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – The Dutch tax system needs a major overhaul and that means lower taxes on wages and the end of mortgage tax relief, central bank chief Klaas Knot has said in an interview with the Volkskrant.

In addition, something needs to be done about the complexity of the current system, Knot said. “Over the years so many exceptions have been made for certain groups that I have to ask myself if our tax system still serves the public interest,” Knot said.

“Is the aim to collect as much tax income as possible at as low a cost to society to pay for public services, or have taxes become a summing up of political interests?”

There is no evidence that some 85% of the deductions, exemptions, discounts and benefits actually achieve their aims, the central bank chief told the paper.

The Netherlands, compared with other countries, has high rates of income tax and the lowest effective tax on assets in the OECD, he said. But the one measure he would like to see disappear is mortgage tax relief which, he said, is driving up house prices.

Reforming that, Knot said, would allow income tax to then be cut. “The biggest driver to get people to work longer hours is cutting taxes.”

Knot, the IMF and other think tanks have called repeatedly for mortgage tax relief to be phased out.

Currently home owners can offset the part of interest they pay on their mortgages against tax for a maximum of 30 years, if they have either a linear or annuity-based mortgage. In 2024, the deductible mortgage interest rate was 36.97% but is gradually being reduced.
