Visit of the mandated police force administrator KPCN

BONAIRE - On October 31st the mandated police force administrator ‘korpsbeheerder’ KPCN, Jan Willem Schaper, visited Bonaire. He was accompanied by the portfolio manager of the Caribbean Netherlands of the Nationale Politie, chief of police Frank Paauw.

The most relevant stakeholders, in the presence of Bouman, discussed the development of the Korps Politie Caribisch Nederland (KPCN). Input for the meeting was the report of Bouman and a report regarding a long-term vision of the KPCN that was drafted by the KPCN management and the employee representatives of KPCN.

The authorities, the public prosecution services and the police force administrator recognize the outlines of both reports. The conclusions can be categorized into three main themes.

The acceleration of the capacity of the KPCN, a more effective management and the strengthening of the internal business management. The importance of the autonomy of KPCN was stressed.

The Rijkswet Politie was not subject to discussion. The role of the police force administrator ‘korpsbeheerder’ will be further examined.  As well as a way to establish a closer cooperation between the KPCN and Nationale Politie.

The outcome of the meeting shall be taken into account in the policy response of the minister of Security and Justice, which is expected to be sent to the Second Chamber before the end of the year. (RCN Caribbean Netherlands)

SECOND CARIBBEAN CHARITY RECEIVES FUNDING FROM CIBC FIRSTCARIBBEAN FOR HAITI RELIEF EFFORT

SINT MAARTEN/JAMAICA - A second Caribbean charity has received funding from CIBC FirstCaribbean to assist with relief efforts in Haiti, which was severely affected by the passage of Hurricane Matthew last month.

J$1.6M, has been donated to Haiti relief through the Jamaica-based Food For The Poor (FFTP) which is working to disseminate food and other supplies to Haitians affected by the hurricane which hit the island on October 3, 2016.

Nigel Holness, Managing Director, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank in Jamaica said that the bank was “very concerned for the well-being of our neighbours in Haiti.”  Speaking at the presentation of the cheque to Food for the Poor Executive Director, David Mair, he said that FFTP has a respected history of relief work in Haiti hence the bank’s decision to work with it to assist the communities devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

Commending FFTP for its efforts, Mr. Holness noted that “clean water, food and shelter are a major priority after a national disaster and we are proud to do our part in ensuring our Haitian brothers and sisters are provided for.”

He said that “while CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank does not operate in Haiti our neighbor was not spared the wrath of Hurricane Matthew and we must help them however we can.”

In his remarks, Mr. Mair said that “CIBC FirstCaribbean must be applauded for their generosity.”  He said the humanitarian response from businesses in Jamaica was outstanding resulting in over seven container shipments to date, of donations of canned food, water and a host of non-perishable items to Haiti.

Food For The Poor, headquarters in Florida, he said, had shipped multiple amounts of relief items as well and the organization’s representatives in Haiti, were focused on feeding and providing shelter for displaced Haitians and helping them develop sustainable incomes.

Last month, shortly after the hurricane hit Haiti, BDS$25,000 was presented to the United Caribbean Trust (UCT) in Barbados to facilitate the purchase and distribution of water filters for the community tanks in the areas in Haiti hardest hit by the Hurricane. The water filters or purifiers which will be installed in schools, orphanages, prisons and churches will give close to one million Haitians access to safe drinking water.

The bank is also finalizing plans to make a sizeable donation to the relief effort in the Bahamas, where one of its largest businesses is located, and which was also significantly affected by Matthew.

CIBC FirstCaribbean CEO meets with clients, staff in Virgin Islands

SINT MAARTEN/TORTOLA, BVI – The Chief Executive Officer of regional bank CIBC FirstCaribbean says the bank’s ability to grow and remain profitable hangs squarely on how it responds to the needs of its customers in the BVI and across the region.

Mr. Gary Brown, who took over leadership of the bank in January this year, was speaking to bank staff during a town hall meeting where he reiterated the bank’s mission to deliver the best banking service and support for its clients.

“Our mission to satisfy our customers and help them achieve what matters to them is dependent on our ability as individuals and as a team to perform our daily tasks with excellence and enthusiasm,” he said.

“Our existence and our ability to grow as a profitable business hinges on how well we are able to execute and deliver what we promise,” Mr. Brown added. “The bank has undergone quite a lot of changes in a relatively short period of time and having taken stock of where we are, we are addressing what needs to be done regionally and in each territory to meet our vision,” he said.

Mr. Brown acknowledged that as part of its internal audit in the BVI, there had been some necessary adjustments in the different business segments to improve efficiency and reliability. “As a team, we need to continually review where we need to adapt to create the best working systems and environment,” he said.

Following a question and answer session, Mr. Brown thanked the staff for their commitment to the bank and encouraged them to keep the lines of communication open between the front line and head office in order to foster effective team work.

Mr., Brown was in the British Virgin Islands from October 11-13, 2016 as part of his annual meetings with bank staff throughout the region.

During the two-day visit, he was accompanied by Mr. Gemel Sobers, Director, Corporate Investment Banking (Ag) and Mr. Rollrick Connell, Corporate Manager and they also met with some clients and other key political and industry leaders.

The tight schedule included a courtesy call on the Premier, Dr. The Honourable D. Orlando Smith.

During his first trip to the BVI in October 2015, Mr. Brown was introduced as the new CEO to take over from Mr. Rik Parkhill in January 2016. At that time, Mr. Brown was taken on a tour of the Cruise Ship Pier development project for which CIBC FirstCaribbean had approved a loan of $15 million to the BVI Ports Authority to complete the landside development.

Mr. Brown joined the bank’s head office in Barbados from his position as Managing Director and Global Head, Corporate Banking at CIBC in Toronto.

CBS: Tourism Stable on Saba and St. Eustatius

SABA/ST. EUSTATIUS - There was little change in the number of tourists visiting Saba and St Eustatius in 2015, compared to the previous year.

Some 11 thousand tourists landed at  St Eustatius’ airport: two thousand day tourists and nine thousand tourists who stayed overnight. Of the latter, 41 percent spent more than a week on the island. Furthermore, the port of St Eustatius received 3.8 thousand tourists, including the visit of a small cruise ship.

Saba was visited by 96 thousand air passengers who came as tourists in 2015, of whom two thousand spent a day on the island. Almost a quarter of the tourist who stayed overnight on the island remained for more than a week.

Another four thousand tourists landed at Saba in pleasure craft. What distinguishes Saba from St Eustatius is that it has two ferries to and from St Maarten. In 2015 these ferries brought 6.8 thousand passengers from St Maarten, many of them tourists.

More tourists visiting Bonaire

The number of cruise passengers calling at the port of  Bonaire increased by  47 percent in 2015. There was also a six percent rise in the number of tourists and business travellers arriving by airplane. Saba and St Eustatius received about the same number of tourists as in 2014, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

In 2015, 230 thousand cruise passengers visited Bonaire. The year before there were 156 thousand visitors. With the exception of the period May-July 2015, there were more visiting cruise passengers than the year before. This was true for August, September and October as well, which had seen few  cruise ships calling in the two preceding years.

Flamingo Airport welcomed 137 thousand tourists and business travellers, nearly eight thousand more than in 2014. One in ten visited Bonaire for one day only. Over a third stayed longer than a week. Nearly three thousand tourists called at the ports of the island in pleasure craft, the same number as in 2014. (RCN Caribbean Netherlands)
