The Sint Maarten Yacht Club is Gearing Up for the Grant Thornton Multiclass Regatta 2025

SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY) - The Sint Maarten Yacht Club is proud to host the Grant Thornton Multiclass Regatta once again this year. The regatta will take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 18–19, 2025. This two-day event is open to sailors in six classes: Optimist, Optimist Green, RS Zest, ILCA, RS Quest, and Sunfast 20.

Alongside local sailors from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, participants from the Saint Barth Yacht Club and Saint Martin Voile pour Tous have already signed up!

Now in its sixth year with Grant Thornton as the title sponsor, the regatta has become a tradition for sailors of all ages and skill levels. Registration opens tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, and runs through Friday, January 17, during office hours at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. Participants can collect their goodie bags during this period, including a regatta shirt.

Racing begins each day with the 9:00 AM Simpson Bay Bridge opening, followed by a 9:30 AM start in Simpson Bay. Saturday will feature a full day of competition, while Sunday will include morning races followed by a prize-giving ceremony for the top three finishers in each fleet at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club.

Last year’s Optimist champion, Lourenço Rolo Couto Jorge, is returning to defend his title. The Optimist class continues to shine as the most popular category in this regatta, with 21 participants already registered across the Green Optimist and Optimist fleets.

The Sunfast fleet had five boats racing in 2024, and there’s hope for a similar turnout this year.

The ILCA class will crown a new champion since Frits Bus, last year’s winner, isn’t competing. After taking a break last year, the RS Zest and RS Quest fleets are expected to return for this year’s edition. The green fleet is new to this regatta, where young sailors will compete.

Registration is still open! Visit https://smyc.com/multiclass-regatta/ for more information, registration and the Notice of Race.

“We are excited to welcome as many participants as possible to this year’s Multiclass Regatta. It is always a joy to see sailors of different ages and skill levels come together to race,” said Elja van der Horst, Race Office for this weekend’s Grant Thornton Multiclass Regatta. “I am looking forward to an exciting weekend of competition on the water!”

CBA Board Reassures Community. Remains Committed to Upholding the Integrity of CBA

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Charlotte Brookson Academy (CBA) Board acknowledges the recent publication by The People’s Tribune on January 14, 2025, and wishes to address the information presented, the CBA Board said in a press statement on Wednesday.

“It is regrettable that only the former director, Ms. Arrindell, was contacted for comment, and the CBA Board was not given the opportunity to provide a comprehensive account of the matter.

“To clarify, on July 26, 2023, the CBA Board initiated legal proceedings against the former treasurer, Mr. G. Rondei, following discrepancies brought to our attention by Ms. Arrindell on July 23, 2023. It is therefore inaccurate and misleading to suggest that the Board allowed Mr. Rondei to continue in his role after these issues were discovered.

“The CBA Board acted promptly and in accordance with established protocols, including informing the previous government immediately about the situation. We understand the concerns about the timeline for addressing this matter.

“Unfortunately, the Office of the Public Prosecutor (OM) has a known backlog, which has delayed progress on the case. However, the Board, through our legal counsel, has been consistently following up, and a meeting with the OM was confirmed last week. We are optimistic that this case will soon be addressed and resolved.

“In the interim, the Board has maintained open communication with key stakeholders. When the first Mercelina government assumed office in June 2024, then Minister of Finance the honorable Marinka Gumbs requested an immediate meeting with the Board, during which both the Board and the former director were present and provided an update.

“Additionally, in August 2024, the Board met with the former Minister of Education’s cabinet Lyndon Lewis to provide further updates. Looking ahead, we have a confirmed meeting next week with the new Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sport (ECYS) the honorable Melissa Gumbs to discuss all matters related to the Academy, including this case and the progress made to date with our school.

“Regarding the termination of Ms. Arrindell’s employment in August 2024, the Board emphasizes that this decision was based on a dispensation request April 1, 2022, the former treasurer Rondei submitted, and it was denied according to article 34, 35, and 36 of the National Ordinance governing secondary education.

“This letter of denial was stamped on October 25, 2023, and was only sent to us in June of 2024. A ministerial administrative decision was also submitted to the board in June 2024. Ms. Arrindell’s inability to provide the requested education credentials despite multiple reminders is unfortunate.

“As a subsidized educational institution, the CBA is required to adhere to strict policies. Obtaining education credentials from the Netherlands—a highly organized system with comprehensive archives—should not have posed a challenge. Furthermore, the Board approved Ms. Arrindell’s enrollment in an online degree program at the Kennedy School of Business, with the condition that she report on her progress.

“Unfortunately, no reports or completed coursework were ever submitted, leading to the Board’s decision to terminate her employment, which included six months’ pay. While we understand that Ms. Arrindell may be disgruntled, it is disheartening that such divisive tactics are being used during this sensitive situation.

“The CBA Board reassures the community that we have addressed this matter with urgency and diligence from the outset. We remain committed to ensuring a resolution and to upholding the integrity of our institution.

“We are diligently working on bringing the institution up to par. We encourage anyone with questions or concerns to reach out directly to the Board,” the statement from the Charlotte Brookson Academy Board of Directors said on Wednesday.

CPS tips for 2025 in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – It’s a new year – 2025 - and many set out their goals which also includes achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

In order to achieve this, you have to eat healthy, get a good sleep every night, reduce daily stress, and step up your daily physical activity.

Every year Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department within the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (Ministry VSA), as part of its annual calendar of observances, highlights and creates awareness about health matters.

In its annual calendar for the month of January, CPS profiles healthy weight and nutrition.

Healthy eating has to do with eating healthy food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.

Physical activity could be a leisure walk for 60-90 minutes daily, but it all depends on your intended goal. Do you want to lose weight or maintain your current weight? You can do brisk walking for 30 minutes a day, five days a week: or 75-minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week such as swimming laps.

Make sure to include seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, beans/peas, soy products, nuts, and seeds. Your new way of eating for 2025 should be low in added sugars, salt, saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol.

Eating healthy doesn’t mean that you have to give up those comfort foods, on the contrary. You can still enjoy your favorite foods but eat them less often (once a week); eat smaller amounts; and try a lower-calorie version.

Physical activity is always good for anyone’s lifestyle. A person who suffers from obesity will have serious consequences eventually where it concerns diseases and other health challenges.

Make sure you have regular physical activity as it will have immediate and long-term health benefits. It improves brain health, reduces the risk of disease, strengthens bones and muscles, and further improves your ability to do everyday activities.

Other examples of physical activity are light yard work, actively playing with children, biking, jogging, running, and most competitive sports.

Contact your family physician or CPS at 914 for more information on maintaining a healthy weight and the nutritional benefits for 2025.

SINT MAARTEN/CURACAO - The Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) has released its 2023 Annual Report, providing a comprehensive overview of its governance, strategy, operations and finances as of December 31, 2023.

The report concludes that the CBCS ended 2023 with a profit of NAf 148,474. The CBCS’s 2023 results show a strong increase in the net interest income of NAf 29,8 million compared to 2022, in line with the increase in international interest rates.

Supervisory income has decreased with NAf 1,1 million to NAf 10,4 million. On the expenditure side costs have developed roughly in line with inflation.

To optimize its reserves and long-term income, the CBCS sold 29,7% of its gold reserves in December 2023 and January 2024, whereby the proceeds were used to invest into US Treasury bonds and the realized capital gain is kept as part of its appropriated reserves.

Sint Maarten Police Force Intensifies Operations During Festive Season

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) has heightened its operational activities during this end-of-year period to ensure the safety and security of residents, businesses, and visitors.

In light of recent incidents, KPSM has increased surveillance on businesses that have been targeted by criminal activities such as theft and robbery over the past months. Detectives and patrol units are working to prevent further offenses and bring offenders to justice. Investigations are underway, and efforts to apprehend individuals with outstanding warrants for various criminal acts are being prioritized.

Over the weekend, numerous scooter riders and motorists were stopped and controlled by KPSM patrols as part of proactive enforcement measures. Additionally, vehicles suspected of being used in connection with criminal activities have been thoroughly searched.

In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, KPSM is exploring solutions to mitigate traffic congestion, particularly in the Cole Bay and Simpson Bay regions, which experience high volumes of traffic during this period.

In Philipsburg, police officers have been maintaining a visible presence in high-traffic areas, including the boardwalk and its surrounding vicinities, where several festive activities are taking place.

KPSM strongly advises the public to take necessary precautions to safeguard personal belongings and ensure their safety during this festive season. Simple measures such as remaining vigilant, securing valuables, and avoiding isolated areas can contribute significantly to personal security.

The Police Force of Sint Maarten extends warm holiday greetings to the entire community and wishes everyone a safe, joyful, and prosperous end-of-year celebration. Let us work together to make this festive season safe and enjoyable for all.
